So yesterday, President Uhuru Kenyatta received a very hostile reception in Migori County. A public rally he was attending together with other leaders ended prematurely after charged youths started heckling and throwing objects at the dais.
The youths began chanting ODM slogans soon after Migori Governor Okoth Obado moved to the microphone to address the gathering and also welcome political leaders to speak.
This commotion left scores of people with minor injuries after they were trampled upon at the main exit gate as they rushed to get out of the Migori Primary School grounds, the venue of the meeting.
So just why did these youths decide to heckle at a presidential function? did they have issued withe the president or their governor?
The president was in the county for a very noble mission, to launch a Sh7 billion mosquito net distribution campaign that will cover 25 mosquito infested counties. Why did the meeting suddenly turn chaotic?
The presidency is an office of honour and a presidential function should be accorded the dignity it deserves. What happened in Migori is not only shameful but also primitive, backward & barbaric.
It is obvious Migori county is an opposition zone, but that does not mean people are allowed to just act the way they want. The prudent thing the agitated Migori residents would have done is to sort out their issues with Gov. Obado once the President left.
ODM has condemned the chaos and asked ODM supporters to accord the President the respect he deserves.
‘On behalf of the ODM and the people of Kenya as a whole, I would like to condemn this type of behavior and to plead to our people to always give the President the respect he deserves,’ ODM said
Such things are outdated, incidences where citizens could turn rallies into chaos just because they do not agree with a leader are a thing of the past. After the 2007/08 post election violence, Kenyans have been crying for peace and harmony among themselves. Thus, hooligans who poison the countries political landscape by inciting others and causing chaos stand condemned.
Bottom line is, respect the presidency, What happened in Migori should not be tolerated anywhere in Kenya
